The Season for Rodents is Coming – Rodent Proof Your Home

leavesClearly we all love the colorful Oregon leaves and golden sunlight of Autumn. However this time of year I always dread the approaching cold weather accompanied by the flu and sick days. All to often these flue like symptoms are actually due to rodents entering homes.

In fact, it isn’t just a coincidence that the most likely time of year for sickness to hit a family is also the most likely time for rats and mice to find their way indoors.  Learn how to rodent-proof your home to better protect against these problems and more.

As mice and rats enter homes seeking food and warmth they spread trouble from the day they enter. Once indoors,  rodents leave fecal matter, contaminated fur and droplets of urine wherever they go. Imagine what happens when these nasty substances are deposited within a kitchen or inside heat ducting. Before long the filth and disease reaches the unsuspecting family and health declines.

The Options for Rodents

While trapping and baiting strategies can remove rodent infestations, they do NOT eliminate the contamination or potential for disease transmission. At best they provide a band-aid solution with frequently repeated need for rodent control efforts.

Structural rodent proofing has been proven to be the BEST and most permanent way to successfully eliminate rodent access and prevent interior rodent contamination.

The Rodent Inspection

The first step in discovering how to rodent proof your home is starting  with a complete and detailed inspection. This inspection should include a careful probing look up on the roof, under the eaves, in the attic, around the exterior siding and even under the home. Trash receptacle areas, wood piles, shrubbery and ground covers should be reviewed. Rat Control Starts With Trash Control

The most common mistake we find homeowners make with exclusion efforts is underestimating rodents abilities to climb. Most homeowners can’t believe the very small holes rodent can use for entry points.  Keep in mind that rodents are amazing acrobats and can climb plants, phone wires, pipes, siding and nearly any other rough surface. They can even climb straight up a brick wall several stories high. Mouse exclusion requires that all gaps over 1/4 inch (rats 1/2 inch) must be screened or filled.

The first goal of a rodent proofing inspection is to determine sources of food for infesting rodents. Careful attention should be given to all sources of food and water. These could be up to 300 or more feet away from shelter areas. They might even be at a neighbors home or nearby restaurant. Outdoor pet dishes, bird feeders, garden ponds, fruit trees, vegetable gardens,  and overflowing trash cans provide great sources for rodent food.

The second goal of the rodent inspection is to locate rodent shelter sites. Wood piles, storm drains, culvert pipes, broken concrete, lumber piles and any other outdoor clutter should be removed or organized off the ground where possible. Rats can dig and love to tunnel under woodpiles or concrete. Look carefully for any holes that might look like an inviting cave to a wandering mouse or rat.

Rodents often smell the odors of food coming from inside a home and look for points of entry that might offer easy access. Past infestations might have established body odors that lead inside–resulting in seemingly rapid re-infestations. Pipes and plumbing penetrations such as air conditioner condenser lines often enter the home with room to spare offering easy access. Foundation and attic eave vents often have missing or damaged screens. Exterior doors might have large gaps around or under them. Dryer vents are frequently clogged with lint and may have inoperable louver doors. Unscreened stink pipes on the roof may even provide access.

The bottom line is that rodents require food and shelter to thrive. By reducing clutter, improving sanitation and limiting rodent access to structures, significant impact on rodent populations can be achieved–even without the use of traps or poisons. Rodent inspections require patience and attention to detail but are the essential first step in any successful rodent exclusion project.

Rodent Proofing Homes Made Easy

Why Its Important To Rodent Proof Your Home

Do you feel like a dog chasing your tail every fall when rodents get into your home necessitating traps, troubles, baits and rodent repairs? Why not just have your home rodent proofed so mice and rats never come back. Rodent proofing homes is the guaranteed long term solution to eliminate rat and mice troubles forever.

Rodent proofing homes

Ideally, the best way to control mice and rats is to make it impossible for them to gain entry into structures. This requires great attention to detail since adult mice can pass through openings 3/8 in. wide.  It is good pest management–for rodents and insects–to rodent proof homes as much as possible.

Rodent proofing homes requires that every possible route of access to the building must be considered. Generally, all openings greater that 1/4 in. for mice and greater than 1/2 in. for rats should be sealed. A common field practice is to inspect the home to locate any gaps or holes large enough to insert a pencil.

Common Areas Rodents Can Access Your Home

1. Utility Walls

Points where utility lines penetrate a wall  are likely access sites for rodents. The opening  around service conduits such as water, electricity, air conditioning, drain pipes and vents should all be properly sealed. Sheet metal, poly-resin coated stainless steel fill fabric, hardware cloth and mortar can be used to fill these and other types of openings. The use of expanding foam material that can be applied from cans is NOT considered effective material for rodent proofing homes.

2. Damaged Screens

Damaged screens in foundation vents and attic vents, misfitting crawl space access doors, and gaps under doors are some of the most common rodent entry points we find. Sometime considerable construction work is required to completely rodent-proof a structure.

3. Gaps in Roofs

Rats can easily reach second story roofs so siding, eaves and even the roof should be inspected for gaps allowing rodents access. Stink pipes on the roof allow easy access too.

And best of all rodent proofing is generally far less expensive that fixing rodent chewed water or electrical lines or even heating systems full of rodent holes.
