Rat Trapping in Eugene – Tips and Tricks

Setting a rat trap or two sounds easy right? Well there actually are a few tricks of the trade you should know so you’ll have a sporting chance against some pretty smart rodents.  Rat trapping in Eugene seems simple at the outset, but proper placement is trickier than it seems.  Our rats are their own, and they have to be handled in a specific way.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Rat Trapping in Eugene

Did you know there is a right and a wrong way to trap mice and rats? Here are a few tips from our professional rodent trapping team.

Don’ts

Wrong Way To Set Rat Traps - rat trapping in Eugene

  1. Avoid setting traps parallel to walls.
  2. Don’t expect to catch rats the first night. Rats don’t like new things and may stay away from traps for days or weeks before being tempted.
  3. Don’t assume after catching one rat that he was the only one. Infestations are often much more severe than homeowners initially expect.
  4. Don’t put out poison bait. A few dead rats can really make a home stink.
  5. Don’t leave traps out in the open where children and pets can access them.

Do’s

  1. Choose the correct trap. Rat trapping requires larger traps than those used for trapping mice.
  2. How to set rodent trapsPosition the bait end of the trap next to the wall so it forms a “T” with the wall. Rodents prefer to run next to walls or other objects for safety and do not like being out in the open.
  3. Wear gloves when handling traps and dead rodents. Rodents spread lots of diseases.
  4. Reuse traps even if they are nasty. Rodents follow smells and all the nasty juices from previously caught rats attracts more rats.
  5. Place traps precisely where rodents are traveling. Traps set even five feet outside a travel path might not be successful.
  6. Don’t test freshness of rodent droppings by tasting them! Bad Idea!!!  🙂

Setting the trap is the easy part. Pealing the bloody, stiff dead rat off the trap is the nasty part that comes next. Rodent Repellent – Ideas For Eugene Homes

Sometimes people ask us if there is such a thing as rat or mouse repellent? Those asking the question may be looking for a magical spray that will quickly eliminate a rodent infestation. While such a product is not likely, here are some guaranteed tips to drive rodents away from your home.  The best rodent repellent is the removal of what rodents need or want from your home.

Rats Keep Out

For Rodent Repellent Eliminate Conducive Conditions

Rats and mice live and thrive based on food supply and secluded, warm places for them to hide. Clamping down on the food supply and eliminating protected hiding places can push rodents away from Lane County homes.

Start with a walk around your home looking for the following conducive conditions:

  • Rodent Conducive ConditionsTrim back trees, bushes and ground covers that touch the roof, siding or foundation. (Rodents like to hide so they don’t get eaten by predators. They just don’t feel comfortable hanging around foundations far from cover.)
  • Clean up “stuff”. Storing stuff against your home or around the foundation can lead to rodent troubles.
  • Poorly fitting trash can lids invite rodent feeding.
  • Stacked wood next to a home provides a great place for rodents to live.
  • Gaps where plumbing penetrations enter the siding welcome rodents inside.Rat Infestation
  • Bird feeders provide a steady supply of food for rodents. (See brown marks on rafters left by rats feeding at bird feeder in photo at right.)
  • Pet food and water dishes left out overnight can attract rats from the entire neighborhood.
  • Plant gardens and locate compost piles away from your home.

Mouse Control

How To Catch Mice

Often our rodent control technicians visit a home to find a repeated homeowner problem:  Several mouse traps have been set, but the customer has been unable to trap any mice. Perhaps bait has even been stolen or traps have been moved. What could be the problem?  Several things could be happening, but we know how to catch mice, and with a little know-how, you can, too.

First Off:  Rats Not Mice

The problem is probably not a mouse problem at all.  Homeowners seem to have a hard time recognizing the different signs rats and mice leave.  These can be quite similar, but there are some defining characteristics.

Rats
  1. Rats are smart.
  2. They can climb practically anything.
  3. Rats chew holes about 1″ in diameter
  4. Rat droppings are about 1/2″ long
  5. Rats move around a lot and can travel from one end of the house to another quite quickly.
  6. Rats can get through holes the size of a dime.
  7. Rats can hide their droppings.
Mice
  1. Mice are not very bright.
  2. They love to eat and nest without traveling very far.
  3. Mouse droppings are about 1/8″ long.
  4. Mice can fit through a 1/4″ gap.
  5. Cleaning up all droppings, then waiting a week to see if they reappear is one of the easiest ways to identify current mouse activity.
  6. Mice love to nest in seldom used drawers and cardboard boxes.

The easiest way to tell the difference between mice and rats is dropping size.

How to Catch Mice:  Why You Have To Know Which Rodent You’re Engaging

How to catch mice - know which trap is which
Top: Rat trap. Bottom: Mouse trap.

Consider your trap placement.  Is it in line with the paths mice have been travelling?  How are the mice entering and leaving those runs?  Try to set the traps so that there are only one or two entrance points to the trigger.  Remember, rat traps are heavier, have tighter springs and are much tougher than mouse traps.

Rat traps can catch mice but mouse traps don’t catch rats.

There really is truth to the old saying that owning a hammer doesn’t make you a carpenter. Owning traps doesn’t necessarily mean you’re using them the best way.  Get faster, easier results by hiring a rodent control specialist.  Often, there can be much more that needs to be done than setting a few traps.
