Norway Rats
These guys can come in a variety of colors but we most frequently see shades of grey. Reproductive adults often have a body 7-10″ long plus the tail. The tail is about the length of the body.
Norway rats love to get under homes in warm dark crawl spaces or duct systems and sometimes may be heard scratching inside walls. They eat nearly anything but especially seem to like snails, pet foods, garbage and pantry items.
Roof Rats
Roof rats look similar to Norway Rats only with a sleeker design–seemingly built for speed. They have a pointier face, slimmer body and a tail much longer than their body. Roof rats are often but not always found in elevated locations. They run along power lines, climb trees and infest attics. Preferred foods of the roof rat included bird seed, nuts, berries, snails, roaches and insects.
Pack Rats
Much different than the other two types, Pack rats are often larger, light brown in color and have distinguishing white belly fur. They also have a furry tail unlike other rats. Traps can be baited with sparkly metallic items or peanut butter. While Norway and Roof rats often infest in large numbers, Pack rats are often solitary and an infestation seldom includes more than one member.
