“It’s enjoyable to be a part of Bug Zapper. It’s a business that encourages ideas, great services, and family-like relationships. For some of my customers, I’m the only person they ever really get to talk to. Those conversations are some of my favorite experiences.

I enjoy listening and getting to know my customers on a personal level. I’ve become friends with many of them, not just a hired help. To me, that’s the reason for life: creating friendships and quality relationships at every turn.”

Nathan – Field Technician and Division Leader

“I enjoy being a pest control technician because it allows me to help protect homes and families while also respecting the natural ecosystem. As an avid gardener, I understand the importance of natural pollinators and beneficial insects.

I always look to help people in any small way I can. The other day, I was doing a service for a customer who’s an elderly lady. She was trying to change out her security cameras on her house, and had just had a hip replacement. I had a few extra minutes on my schedule, so I pulled out my ladder and got all the cameras down for her.”

“It’s satisfying. I’ll show up, and kids and dogs are running around trying to enjoy a summer day. I dig up a yellowjacket nest and keep them from having a really bad day.

I had a rodent job where I caught 33 rats in the first week. The customer had no idea it was so bad. When rats keep people up at night, I get to bring back some peace and rest.

A lot of times, it’s about just doing my best to take care of people. I remember a day that hadn’t gone as planned. I was tired, but I knew a customer was counting on me to come take care of their pest issue. So I went. I got there at 7 pm. The customer couldn’t believe I still came. They were so happy that they took a picture of us together. That was a good experience.”

“For myself and others on my team, we actually look forward to helping out as many people as we can. We treat every home like it’s our own.

When someone calls with a pest problem, I always try to say yes, even if it means working extra or on a day off. Just yesterday, a customer called with moles. My day was already packed, but I knew if I didn’t go, the customer would spend a week waking up to new dirt mounds every day. So I took care of it.

That’s one of the reasons I come to work. I believe everyone should be able to come home to a pest-free environment and actually relax, not stress about the little things in life.”

“Changing lives even in small parts is rewarding, and the biggest reason I do this every day.

An elderly lady living alone had a rodent infestation. Every night, she could hear the rats, and in the morning, she’d find droppings all over. She was terrified. It got to where she’d spend her time outside, not wanting to be inside where a rat could jump out. All the closets were barricaded shut.
I got to her home, and within just a few visits, I cleaned the rats out.
For the past month, she’s bee rodent free. She’s sleeping in her bed again. She’s not in tears when she gives me updates. She’s not afraid to open her closet door.

Giving people that peace of mind, that safe feeling, means a lot. Your home is your safe spot, and if you can’t be comfortable, to me that’s wrong. When someone is distraught, in tears, at their wits’ end over bed bugs, or roaches, or rats, etc., it breaks my heart. I try to always treat people with empathy, kindness, and patience.”

“It’s extremely rewarding, helping people – usually it’s with bugs or rats, but it’s more than that to me. I remember knocking on a door for a routine bug service. The customer opened the door, visibly upset. I did her pest service, but before I started, I spent time just being with her. We’re still friends today.

It’s the little things. I saw a post from a community member who had items stolen off her son’s grave site; one of the stolen items was a bee planter. Since we love bees at Bug Zapper, I planted up a new planter and left it with a note on the grave site. I just wanted to restore a little faith in humanity!”

Rhonda – Field Technician and Happiness Director

“Every day I get to have a positive impact on people’s lives, solving real-world problems. Problems like ants and rodents – plus other ways to help often come up. One time I pulled up to a house, and the neighbor was stuck with a flat tire. So I fixed it for them. Another time, I spent 20 minutes chasing down a runaway dog.

One of my favorite experiences was actually on a call for a dead smell under a house. I was under the house, crawling around. I glanced to my left and saw a pair of eyes staring at me…never a good sign when you’re under a house! Then 5 more sets of eyes popped up. It turned out to be kittens trapped under the house. The vet said one more day, and they wouldn’t have made it. So that was a good day! (I also removed a dead opossum from under the house)”

Gary – Field Technician

“I get to change people’s lives in ways that some people might not even realize. Having bed bugs or other pests can disrupt and wreck lives fast. Helping someone through that brings a lot of joy to me.

Sometimes opportunities to help are unexpected. One of my favorite experiences happened while I was driving between jobs. As I approached a stoplight, I saw an elderly lady trying to cross the road while the cars had a green light! I stopped my truck, put on my emergency lights, and helped her safely across the road. It turned out she’d gotten lost; I walked with her for about 20 minutes back to her house. When I got her home, I learned that she was the mom of one of our customers.

I’ve found doing good things, no matter who it’s for, always returns good things.”

“Coming from a background in security, it’s nice to work in a job that doesn’t involve babysitting adults making poor decisions! Every pest job is a different puzzle; all help people in a real way.

I had an elderly couple with rodents in their house. It kept them from being able to have their grandkids over. It even led to missing Christmas and Thanksgiving. They hired two other companies, with no success. We came in and were able to identify the entry point, catch the rats, and help them spend time with their grandkids again.

One of my clients has a horse ranch, and it had a serious gopher issue with tons of mounds. One horse ended up breaking its leg and had to be put down. Now that we’re involved, there’s rarely a mound on the property.

Even simple things like ants can seriously impact life. One family I worked with had to throw out food; they were losing sleep because of the ants crawling on them; and they were stressed trying to do it themselves. I came in and had the issue under control within a couple of visits.

The ability to sleep – without bug, without rats – is a better life.”

“When I originally applied to work in pest control, it was just a job; now it’s my favorite job ever. I like helping people. I enjoy getting rid of pests and rodents. Helping people sleep better at night just really feels good.

I had one account where the customer was away from their house for months. Rodents got in while they were away and were chewing through the walls and nesting inside the house. For a while, we couldn’t figure out where the rats were coming in. So I spent 2 hours one day inspecting the entire house. From the scratch marks, I was able to figure out what was going on, then put an end to the problem. The customer was super happy I spent the additional time and went the extra mile.

I enjoy my job, and it never gets boring!”
