What do you use to eliminate bed bugs?

Bedbugs are capable of developing resistance to pesticides and have been a challenge to kill ever since they started gaining resistance to DDT around WW2. As a pest control company, we keep up with the latest innovations in bed bug control. The majority of the industry has made a shift away from chemical-based insecticides to gain control. First, we start with a thorough inspection, then we vacuum up any live bedbugs and eggs, and finally, we employ a fungal spore formulation to gain control of them, this method is non-toxic to humans and pets which is ideal for their control. We use a low-pressure coarse spray around cracks, crevices, and areas where they hide to control them. While the spores themselves are harmless to humans, we do have to make sure that people and pets are away from the treatment area as we are making our application, this ensures that the product can settle and we can complete a thorough inspection. The fungal spores take a few days to take effect, but once they do they spread like wildfire throughout the bedbug population. This treatment method is 100% effective.

    What are bed bugs?

Bed bugs are small, reddish/brown parasitic insects that feed exclusively on blood. Female common bed bugs can lay anywhere between 1-10 eggs a day (up to 500 in their lifetime), and a single bed bug is capable of surviving 70 days without food or sustenance. They're found in every region of the world.

While bed bugs haven't been found to transmit diseases to humans, their bites can cause intense allergic reactions, infection, harmful blood loss, and disruption to normal sleep.

How do I know if I have a bed bug infestation?

If you're waking up with red, itchy bites, often in a row of three, you may have bed bugs. If this is the case, it's important to refrain from scratching the bites in order to prevent infection. However, it is common in many cases for bites from bed bugs to have no visible effects. Infestations can also be identified by dark spots on walls, mattresses, sheets, furniture, and in corners of the home. Bed bugs are usually nocturnal and prefer feeding at night, while hiding in cracks and crevices during the day.

If you find live bugs, the best course of action is to carefully collect them in a sealed container for our professionals to identify. Bed bug infestations will not go away on their own, and are only resolved with professional intervention.

    How do bed bugs spread?

Bed bugs are known for their ability to travel. They can easily be brought into a home on infested bags, clothes, furniture, or even on library books. They can travel on luggage or move through shared walls in apartments and townhouses. Bed bugs are speedy, and are capable of moving up to four feet per minute!

Beware of all roadside and garage sale furniture. Infested items are not always obvious. Always consider if that free couch is worth the possible trouble!

Should I throw my mattress away if I have bed bugs?

It is not recommended to throw out your mattress if you have a bedbug infestation. This is a bad idea for three reasons:

    1. You run the risk of spreading them throughout your home. They can drop off the mattress as you are carrying it through the house. Bedbugs can survive up to one year without a blood meal and they will travel in your house to you or someone else.

    2. The mattress may not be the only area that they are hiding in your bedroom. They will also try to hide in the bed frame, behind posters and pictures on the wall, cracks in your baseboards, nightstands, electronics nearby, and pretty much anywhere that is small enough for a bedbug to hide.

    3. You may end up making them someone else’s problem if they decide to take the mattress.

If you absolutely must throw the mattress away we recommend waiting until after your bedbug control program has concluded. This way you can throw it out with the knowledge that you won't spread them in your house and you won't be spreading them to other people.

How to Prepare for Bed Bug Treatments

Bed bugs have survived for thousands of years due to their remarkable ability to hide in obscure locations, often far from their namesake beds. Successful removal of these pests hinges on a detailed treatment process for all areas bed bugs occupy.

Accurate identification by our trained technician is essential prior to scheduling treatment. This identification process is provided as part of a detailed home pest removal inspection. We suggest catching and saving any bugs you find in a jar prior to our inspection. This will help our technician quickly and accurately confirm the bug's identity.

Prior to our inspection, please do not move furniture, start the treatment preparation process or attempt any do-it-yourself treatments. This can make finding and identifying the problem more difficult and over-the-counter products often make the bugs scatter. This can actually make the problem worse!

Get started by following our bed bug treatment preparation checklist.

Bed Bug Treatment Preparation Checklist

The following preparation steps are vital for a successful bed bug treatment and complete eradication. These steps must be followed in all rooms identified by your technician as infested. All steps need to be completed prior to your technician’s scheduled arrival for the first treatment.

  • Pick up all clothes on floors or furniture and run through a hot dryer cycle for a minimum of 40 minutes. Place these clean, dry clothes in a large garbage bag sealed at the top until the treatment has been completed.
  • Remove all clothing items from storage areas such as cabin beds or beds with built-in storage and dry at high heat for a minimum of 40 minutes. Place these clothes in a large garbage bag sealed at the top until the treatment has been completed.
  • Declutter, as this will assist in removing potential bed bug harborages. Check items for signs of infestation.
  • Move all furniture items away from the walls to allow access to the baseboards around the entire room.
  • It is not necessary to remove clean clothing or other items from drawers or cupboards unless these items are within 5 feet of a bed or clearly infested (visible bed bugs). Ornaments and other items can be left in place.
  • Vacuum baseboards to remove dust build-up from these areas. Remove the vacuum cleaner bag or contents of the canister, place in a plastic bag, and dispose of in the trash can outside your apartment/home.
  • Cover fish tanks, terrariums, and small animal cages with a clean towel or sheet.
  • Dismantling of bed frames will be performed as part of the service program. If your bed frame requires special tools to dismantle, please have these tools available for your technician.
  • We will remove the cheesecloth on the underside of each box spring for the required treatment application.
  • Remove all sheets, covers, dust ruffles, comforters, pillows, and any other bedding covers from your mattress and box spring in all bedrooms being treated. Wash all bed linens in the hottest water possible and then run through a hot dryer cycle for a minimum of 40 minutes.
  • DO NOT RE-ENTER TREATED AREAS FOR 4 HOURS AFTER SERVICE.
  • DO NOT SPRAY ANY PESTICIDES OR CLEANING PRODUCTS IN TREATED AREAS AFTER THE TREATMENT. THIS WILL RESULT IN CONTROL FAILURE.
  • IT IS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL THAT SLEEPING LOCATIONS NOT BE CHANGED AFTER THE INITIAL INSPECTION. CHANGING SLEEPING LOCATIONS CAN PULL BED BUG INFESTATIONS TO NEW AREAS OF THE HOME AND INCREASE THE TOTAL TREATMENT COSTS.
  • Allow the treatment time to work. Do not clean or remove the spray barriers. In most cases, barriers will have been applied in inconspicuous areas, but if the infestation was suspected behind baseboards or electrical outlets, a 2" spray barrier may have been applied on the wall above or around these installations. Under certain lighting conditions, these barriers may be visible. Leave these in place until you are certain that the infestation has been eradicated. The barrier will remain active for up to 3 months if left undisturbed but is easily removed with kitchen or bathroom cleaner when required.

What to expect:

Live bed bugs may be visible for 2-3 weeks after the treatment. Affected bugs may be seen wandering in unusual places, this is a sign that the treatment is working. Remember that bed bugs may not leave their harborages for a number of days after treatment, and nymphs hatching from eggs will not be affected until they cross a spray barrier. However, all bed bugs will die within 3-7 days after coming into contact with treated areas. Please contact our office at 541-636-0146 if you still see live bed bugs 30 days after treatment.
