Bed bugs hotel research from the University of Kentucky recently found that online reviews mentioning a bed bug infestation in a hotel room can lower the value of the room by $38 per night for business travelers and $28 per night for leisure travelers.

The study was based on a survey of nearly 2,100 travelers from all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Essential steps for removal of bed bugs

  • Inspection to identify infested rooms
  • Facility maintenance staff pre-treatment preparations
  • Initial clean-out treatment
  • Two follow-up treatments two weeks apart

Step #1 Inspection to identify infested rooms

Our trained bed bug specialist will need access to perform a detailed, inspection of all possibly infested rooms. If a room is determined to be infested by bed bugs, then all rooms with immediately adjoining walls must also be inspected. This will include the rooms above, below and on the sides of every infested room. There is no additional charge for the inspection process.

Step #2 Facility maintenance staff pre-treatment preparations

Prior to the initial treatment the following steps must each be completed by the facility maintenance staff:

_____ Discard all trash, paper, plastic bags, newspapers, magazines and other disposable items. These should be sealed in plastic bags and placed directly inside dumpsters to prevent contamination of additional rooms.

_____ Strip the bed(s) and bathroom placing all sheets, pillowcases, mattress pads, blankets, bed skirts and bath towels in sealed plastic bags for transport directly to the laundry room. Launder all items with hot water. Dry these items on the hottest dryer cycle available for 60-90 minutes. Bags used to transport laundry prior to the washing/ drying cycles should never be reused and should be discarded outside of the property after transportation.

_____ Vacuum all infested rooms, including the floor, mattresses, bedsprings, couches, chairs, closets (including closet shelves), inside dresser drawers and bedside drawers. Vacuum with a crevice tool all baseboards. Vacuum bags are to be placed in a sealed plastic bag and discarded.

_____ Remove all drapes and hang them inside a closet within the infested room.

_____ Place all movable items such as waste baskets, telephones, coffee makers, ironing boards, picture frames, welcome guides, tv remotes, ac covers, etc. inside closets or dresser drawers.

_____ Any items that do not fit inside closets or dresser drawers need to be placed inside large, heavy plastic bags. Leave enough room for us to seal the bags tightly during treatment. Do not seal bags. Leave these prepared bags inside the shower.

_____ Remove every light switch and electrical outlet cover and place them inside bedside or dresser drawers.

_____ Move beds, dressers and all furniture one foot away from walls until all three treatments have been completed..

NOTE: Due to the success of our treatment process It is NOT necessary to dispose of mattresses or other furniture.

Step #3 Initial clean-out treatment

  • Infested rooms will be treated in detail using our guaranteed system that has been proven to kill bed bugs.
  • Following treatment, the heater should be left on in the treated rooms to maintain a temperature of 80+ degrees. This accelerates the egg hatching cycle.
  • Dismantling of bed frames will be performed as part of the service program.
  • We will remove the cheesecloth underside of the box spring for required treatment application.
  • Treated rooms must remain undisturbed for 72 hours following the initial treatment.
  • The client should not touch or move any treatment or monitoring device placed by the technician.
  • "Booster" insecticide treatments may cause bed bugs to spread and MUST NOT be performed by hotel staff.
  • If necessary, treated rooms may be reassembled and occupied 72 hours following the initial treatment. Live bed bugs may possibly be seen up to 45 days following the initial treatment. The longer the treated rooms remain unoccupied, the lower the risk of customers observing live bugs. If rooms are reassembled all furniture and beds should remain away from walls.
  • Items in closits and dressers should remain unmoved for a minimum of three days following the initial treatment. If possible, leave these items undisturbed for the full duration of the three treatments.

Step #4 Two follow-up treatments each two weeks apart

Prior to both follow up treatments, the following steps must each be completed by the facility maintenance staff:

_____ If the treated rooms have been reassembled, then strip the bed(s) and bathroom placing all sheets, pillowcases, mattress pads, blankets, bed skirts and bath towels in sealed plastic bags for transport directly to the laundry room. Launder all items with hot water. Dry these items on the hottest dryer cycle available for 90 minutes. Bags used to transport laundry prior to the washing/ drying cycles should never be reused and should be discarded outside of the property after transportation.

NOTE: If necessary, treated rooms may be reassembled and occupied 24 hours after the two follow up treatments are completed. Live bed bugs may possibly be seen up to 45 days following the initial treatment. The longer the treated rooms remain unoccupied, the lower the risk of customers observing live bugs. If rooms are reassembled all furniture and beds should remain away from walls.
