Hornets are the largest type of social wasp. Social wasps are wasps that form colonies and construct paper nests from wood pulp or other plant fiber. Hornet colonies in Oregon die off in the winter, with the queen entering hibernation until the next spring. When queens emerge, they begin building new nests which rapidly fill with aggressive worker hornets who forage and enlarge the nest. Hornets, like wasps, can be recognized by their black abdominal stripes, however, hornets are generally reddish-brown in color.
Due to their coloration and stripe patterning, bees are often mistaken for hornets and wasps, though most species of bee show very little aggression. While hornet nests near the home require extermination measures, bees are a wildly beneficial species to humans and the environment, and are generally treated with safe relocation techniques. If you need help identifying a hornet, wasp, bee, or other insect, don’t hesitate to give our technicians a call!
Hornet infestations are generally recognized by large numbers of worker hornets present on a property, or by the presence of hornet nests. Hornets and other social wasps construct aerial, paper-like hives with a single exit hole at the bottom. These nests may be built in trees or under the eaves of roofs, or they may be built on walls or within hollow sections of buildings. Because of their dangerous nature, hornet nests should not be approached or disturbed without assistance from a professional.
Hornets and other wasps are known for their highly aggressive temperament. Workers are territorial and extremely protective of nests, and will relentlessly attack any humans or animals they deem threatening. Unlike honey bees, wasps do not die upon delivering a sting, and are capable of attacking repeatedly and delivering multiple large injections of venom. They often attack in sizable groups, and can cause significant physical injury as well as life-threatening allergic reactions. Proper protective clothing and equipment are required for dealing with hornet or wasp infestations, and attempting to eliminate a colony on your own can be very dangerous. Trust Bug Zapper professionals to quickly treat and remove hornet nests from anywhere on your property. Bug Zapper pest control professionals use a proven hornet extermination system that kills hornets within minutes. We eliminate whole colonies along with their nests to ensure reinfestation doesn’t occur, and like every service we offer, our hornet, wasp, and yellow jacket control services are backed by our 100% satisfaction guarantee.
